The Irish chapter of the IT
Service Management forum (itSMF) was today officially
launched at a meeting of the forum in DIT Aungier Street.
The itSMF is one of the key promoters of the Information
Technology Infrastructure Library or ITIL, a framework of
best practice approaches intended to facilitate the delivery
of high quality IT services.
Speaking at the event, Keith
Aldis, CEO of the UK Chapter said, "According to Gartner, by
2008, ITIL compliance will be a buying criteria in 75% of
relevant IT sourcing decisions. The itSMF is a platform to
share knowledge, current best practices and promote exemplar
service management processes."
Karl Howley one of the
founding directors of the Irish chapter said, "ITIL has
really only come to the fore here since it was adopted as an
ISO standard (ISO/IEC 20000), in December 2005. We expect to
draw members from a wide range of industry sectors beyond
IT, particularly since Ireland lags behind many other
countries when it comes to embracing ITIL.
"The chapters are
effectively traditional users groups and we would hope to
draw about 80% of our membership from public and private
sector organisations. We are effectively 10 years behind the
UK, but the standards are developing quickly and there is a
lot of interest locally, particularly around the service
desk/service support arena," said Howley.
Organisations seeking
outsourcing or consultancy assistance in service
delivery/support are frequently using ITIL as a reference
point. Howley added, "IT service management is at the stage
now where IT project management might have been 10-15 years
ago. IT project management has become a profession in its
own right and IT service management is becoming recognised
in the same way." Karl Howley runs an ITSM practice at I.T.
Alliance, the Irish outsourcing company.
The ITIL framework has been
rewritten and significantly expanded and will be formally
launched on May 30th. One of the keynote speakers at today's
event David Wheeldon, is one of the leading authorities in
this area, he is co-author of ITIL V3 service operation, a
member of the ITIL V3 International examinations panel and
chief examiner of ISEB ITIL.
The Irish Chapter of the
Information Technology Service Management Forum (itSMF) is a
non profit organisation affiliated to the itSMF
International.
